Elounda is the family friendly cosmopolitan resort on the north east coast of the Greek island of Crete. It has become a popular holiday destination with many hotels sitting on or close to the shores of Korfos Gulf and Mirabello Bay. Probably the most famous place in the area is Spinalonga, the ex Venetian island fortresss and former leper colony that the tourist can now visit.

The seafront area of Schisma / Skisma is commonly known as Elounda and the village of Plaka lies approx 5 km up the coast. In between sits the sleepy hamlet of Tsifliki, although the growth of luxury hotels ensures that buildings are plentiful along the length of the road.

By far the larger, Elounda offers a wide selection of restaurants, cafes, bars, shops, services, medical posts and facilities such as telephones and ATM machines. Plaka has in recent years also seen an increase in the number of shops and tavernas catering to tourists staying in the new hotels in the area.
